Fossil fuels are energy resources that came from the remains of plants and animals. These remains are millions of years old. Some examples of fossil fuels are: petroleum oil, natural gas, and coal. Fossil fuels, like coal and natural gas, provide the energy that powers our lifestyles and our economy.,and power everything from the planes in the sky to the cars in the road. They heat our homes, and can light up the world. Yet, they are a limited resource.
One of the main uses of fossil fuels is to generate electricity. Coal, oil, and gas are called "fossil fuels" because they have been formed from the organic remains of prehistoric plants and animals.
Advantages
- Fossil fuels can generate huge amounts of electricity in just a single location
- Fossil fuels are very easy to find
- When coal is used in power plants, they are very cost effective
Disadvantages
- use of natural gas can cause unpleasant odors
- Coal produces carbon dioxide when burned. It also gives off sulfur dioxide, a kind of gas that causes acid rain
- The mining of coal results in the destruction of wide areas of land
